Communication Exercises for Couples
Updated August 2026
Communication is a skill you practice, not a switch you flip. These exercises are small, repeatable activities that build the habit of talking well. Try one at a time and see what sticks.
1. The daily high-low
Each share one high and one low from your day. It is a low-pressure way to stay in each other’s world without a heavy conversation. Two minutes, no fixing required.
2. The five-minute listen
One partner talks for five minutes about anything on their mind. The other only listens and reflects back what they heard before responding. Then switch. It builds the muscle of being heard before being solved.
3. Appreciation rounds
Take turns naming one specific thing you appreciated about the other this week. Specifics matter more than generics (“I liked how you handled the morning rush” beats “you’re great”).
4. The “what I need” check
Each name one thing you need more of and one thing you need less of right now. Keep it to current, concrete needs rather than sweeping critiques.
5. A weekly check-in
Pick a couple of questions and answer them together once a week. Over time this becomes the rhythm that keeps small issues from becoming big ones.
How to use these
Pick one exercise and do it for a week or two before adding another. The goal is not to do all of them — it is to find the ones that fit your relationship and make them a habit.
